A criminal and city Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) leader, who was detained on Saturday night by the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab), was released yesterday.

A patrol team of Rab on Saturday night detained Md Shahed alias 'Technical Shahed', joint secretary of city JCD unit who is also a former CMP (Chittagong Metropolitan Police) listed criminal, from Nasirabad Industrial Area along with a few others.

"We brought Shahed and others in, we examined their history thoroughly, and found no evidence or case against them so we released them around 3:00am with an undertaking," said Osman Gani, Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Rab-7, yesterday afternoon.

Sources said Shahed, a notorious criminal, is based in and around Technical Training Centre (TTC) area at Nasirabad. He was accused in eight cases including two murder cases, the sources added.

"Shahed was the accused no 5 in the JCD leader Shahidul Alam Nitol murder case. Nitol was killed on May 29, 2001," the sources said. "He is also accused in an arms case filed with Double Mooring Police Station," they said adding that he had managed to free himself of all the accusations later on.

It may be mentioned Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, parliamentary affairs advisor to the prime minister, was also an accused in the Nitol murder case. Nitol was killed at city's Gani Bakery area which is about 20 metres from the residence of SQ Chowdhury.
