Journalist assaulted in Savar

Agitated people and shop owners beat up Javed Mustafa, who claims to be a correspondent of a Bangla daily and a private satellite TV channel, at around 8:00pm in front of his house at Savar bus stand.

Earlier in the afternoon, Javed went to Master Telecom (MT), a mobile phone shop in Savar bus stand, and ordered the employee, Jahangir, to put all the cellphone sets in front of him.

But when Jahangir requested him to choose one from the display, Javed got infuriated and took away two cellphone sets from the shop, saying that he is a journalist.

Hearing the news, local people rushed to the journalist's house and started shouting at him. As Javed came out of his house, they beat him up.

Later, the owner of the shop stepped in to reach a mutual understanding in presence of the police.

"We did not file any case as he (Javed) made his apologies to us," said Md Abdullahel Baki, owner of the shop.

"He has returned one set and assured that he would pay money for the other set," he added.
