Staying the operation of the transfer orders of some 15 JU teachers, the High Court yesterday issued rule upon the government to explain why the provision of the Jagannath University Act 2005 that barred from teaching at the university with one's III class educational background should not be declared illegal.

A division bench of the High Court also issued rule upon the authorities to show cause why the transfer orders issued on October 19 should not be declared unlawful.

The court orders came upon a writ petition filed by 15 out of 38 JU teachers, who were transferred to different government colleges, challenging the provision of the Act terming it "illegal and violation of fundamental rights".
