Mobile phone users in Dhaka will be able to make emergency calls to Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the police stations using a short and common code, 999, very soon.

The Bangladesh Teleco-mmunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) and five mobile phone operators at a meeting yesterday decided to launch the service as soon as possible. A committee to implement the decision was also formed, sources said.

The DMP earlier requested the BTRC to take an initiative in this regard so that the mobile phone subscribers can seek help from the police in case of any emergency.

Presently, the land phone users and Teletalk, state-run mobile phone company, subscribers can make '999' calls, but the subscribers of the four private mobile companies -- GrameenPhone, Aktel, Banglalink and CityCell -- don't have such opportunity.

According to sources, mobile phone users may not have to pay for making such calls.
