Mugging at Gulshan was 'stage-managed'

Police arrested four people, including two employees of Agrani Trading Corporation, in this connection on Tuesday and recovered Tk 2.50 lakh.

On August 5, a total of 11 staffers of the Trading Corporation were carrying Tk 32.60 lakh to Premier Bank at Gulshan to deposit the money at around 9:15am when the 'stage-managed' looting took place. Two employees carrying Tk 9.82 lakh were stabbed and crackers were also exploded at the time of looting.

Rafiqul Islam and Arman Majumder, who were stabbed, finally confessed to the police that they were involved in the incident, police said.

Investigation Officer of the case Sub-Inspector Md Shamsudduha said his suspicions were aroused because the statements of the injured employees and the witnesses of the incident did not match.

The police arrested the two employees after they recovered from stab injuries and were released from the hospital a few days ago.

During the interrogation, Rafiq confessed that he along with his associates staged the drama of mugging.

Acting on his statement, the police recovered Tk 2.5 lakh and arrested two of their associates -- Ramzan and MA Mannan from Shefa Drugs in North Gulshan on Tuesday evening.

Sub-Inspector Shamsudduha said that the police are trying to recover the rest of the money and to arrest other persons involved.

The police produced the four arrestees in the court yesterday and prayed for 10-day remand for them, he added.
