Need for skilled English teachers stressed

Speakers at a conference stressed the need for expansion of modern training facilities for the English language teachers.

Although the present state of English language teaching is not a satisfactory one, there are efforts by different institutions to bringing a big change, they observed.

The UK-Bangladesh Education Trust (UKBET), a UK based organisation working to improve the status of English language teachers of different educational institutions of greater Sylhet region, organised the daylong conference in collaboration with the British Council (BC), Dhaka.

About a hundred teachers, senior educationists and officials took part in the conference held at Zestate Holiday Resort in the outskirt of the city.

June Rollinson, country director of the BC; Annette Zerra, chair of the UKBET Trustees; other Trustees of UKBET Sandra Nichols, Ayub Korom Ali, Dr Kabir Chowdhury; Destiny Associate Steve Plettner, BC Project Officer in Sylhet Bryony Sumaya Rayhan, BC Deputy Director Simon Harris and UKBET Project Director Md Shamsuddin addressed the inaugural session.

Zera in her speech said the teachers could make major change of a nation. UKBET is providing the best inputs to the teachers of Sylhet region so that they can build themselves as qualified people in real sense.
