New research on malaria in Bandarban soon

The plan was disclosed at a press conference held in the auditorium of Bandarban Hill District Council office recently.

Mamaching, chairman of Bandarban Hill District Council, was present at the press conference as chief guest while researcher of Vienna University Dr Kamla, executive officer of the Council M Khorshed Alam Chowdhury, Civil Surgeon Dr Mahfuzur Rahman Talukdar and head of Paracytology Laboratory, ICDDRB, Dr Rashidul Haque discussed different aspects of the research.

Dr Mahfuzur Rahman said both the research groups have selected Bandarban Sadar Hospital as the centre for work.

Another international research is also going to be started to invent more effective drug for malaria disease, he added.

Dr Rashidul Haque said the research is the first of its kind in the country.

He said the researchers have selected the district for conducting the research work as it is the most high-risk zone for malaria in the country.

District health office sources said the plan for undertaking new researches on malaria at international level has been taken following the failure of the recently accomplished research titled 'Roll back Malaria.'

They said the quinine and traditional system of treatment are not sufficient in dealing with the disease. The new researches will help improve the treatment system, they added.
