A man allegedly strangled his wife, an NGO worker, for dowry at Mohammadpur in the capital in the early hours of yesterday.

Police recovered the body of Shahnaz Begum, 18, a fieldworker of PDF and wife of Harun-ur-Rashid, from her house at Tikkapara yesterday .

Family sources said Harun demanded Tk one lakh from his father-in-law Abdus Sattar, a shop-owner, four days ago as dowry. Harun picked up a quarrel with his father-in-law as he refused to pay the money.

Victim's elder brother Md Russell told The Daily Star that his youngest sister found Shahnaz dead at Harun's house yesterday morning when she had gone to meet her.

Later police recovered the body and sent it to the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital morgue.

Morgue sources said that the body had marks of bruises lips in the neck.

Her family filed a case with Mohammadpur Police Station under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

Harun is absconding since the incident.
