A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced a man to death for killing his wife for dowry eight years ago at Nawabganj upazila in Dhaka district.

Judge Kaniz Akhter Nasrina Khanam of the Fourth Special Tribunal for Prevention on Women and Children Repression handed down the sentence in presence of the convict Saidur Rahman alias Chand Ali.

The court acquitted Chand's parents Shahabuddin and Talashi Bibi and brother Nur Ali of charges.

After their marriage, Chand Ali used to press his wife Lovely Akhter for bringing money from her parents' house. But she refused to oblige her husband as her parents gave Tk 20,000 as dowry at the time of their marriage. Later, Chand killed his wife at his Khatia village home under Nawabganj upazila in Dhaka district on January 9,1997 for Tk 30,000 as dowry.

Chand filed an unnatural death case, which was turned a murder case on the basis of the post-mortem report on March 17 the same year.

Special Public Prosecutor Akhteruzzaman appeared for the state while Advocate Mohammad Shahajahan defended the accused.
