Awami League (AL) leaders at a rally yesterday said the government has no right to remain in power after being identified as 'anti-people' in a foreign country.

They called upon people to oust the government for restoring the image of the country.

The rally was organised by Dhaka city unit AL at Muktangan.

"It's a shame when we have to hear that 16 US lawmakers requested President Bush to raise the issue of present political violence in Bangladesh at the ongoing UN World Summit," said Mohammad Hanif, president of the city unit.

The nation feels dishonoured when the whole world terms Bangladesh a failed state, he added.

AL Joint General Secretary Obaidul Kader demanded immediate resignation of the government as it has tarnished the country's image.

He said on her return to the country, the prime minister will also receive the people's notice for failing to govern the country.

Obaidul Kader called upon people to make the August 21 countrywide hartal a success.

AL Presidium Member Abdur Razzak MP said Jamaat leader Matiur Rahman Nizami should be put on trial for blaming the AL for serial bomb blasts across the country.

"The BNP itself has acknowledged the involvement of extremist religious group in August 17 blasts while Nizami blamed AL, India and Jews for the incident," he added.

The lives of general people have been severely stifled by the frequent price hike of fuel and other essentials," said Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, general secretary of the city unit.

AL leader Mukul Bose, Advocate Sahara Khatun, Kamal Ahmed Majumder, Omar Ali, Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, Faiz Uddin Mia, Mukul Chowdhury, Advocate Kamrul Islam, Habibur Rahman Siraj and Aowlad Hossain also addressed the rally.

Later, a procession was brought out that paraded different city streets.
