Procession to raise awareness about rights of domestic helps

With a view to creating awareness among the community people about the rights of domestic helps, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) brought out a colourful procession with a slogan 'we are committed to protecting the domestic helps' in ward no.8 of Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) yesterday.

About 150 school children and 15 domestic helps participated in the procession. Ferdousi Ahmed Misti, commissioner of ward no. 8, led the procession that was also participated by locals and representatives of ASK.

Talking to The Daily Star, Ward Commissioner Misti said torture of domestic helps, especially children is now such a common and frequent incident that newspaper readers do not even read these news any more.

Quoting from the ASK report, Misti said 154 domestic helps died due to torture in the last three years.

Misti also said only community based protection system and awareness campaign among the community people can protect the workers from violence.

Under her direction, a committee has already been formed that will survey the domestic helps of different houses of the ward and later it will also monitor the situation of the workers, she added.
