Rampant corruption leads country towards economic disaster

They called for containing bribing, irregularities, repression and price hike of essentials, including fuel and agriculture inputs, to save the country.

The daylong seminar under the banner of 'Future of Bangladesh Economy' was organised by Bangladesh Jubak Economic Council at Birampur Auditorium.

Dr Kazi Kholiquzzaman, a renowned economist and president of Bangladesh Economic Society, was the chief guest at the seminar chaired by AZM Saleh, president of Bangladesh Jubak Samity.

The discussants alleged that at least 80 percent of foreign aids was looted by some corrupt government and non-government officials.

They called for replacement of corrupt government and non-government officials by those who are honest and dedicated for the sake of national interest.

The speakers said industrial and trade sectors are struggling with a recession that the country experienced soon after its independence.

They alleged that the major industries had sacked around 30 percent of their workers as they were forced to cut down their production.

Investment in industrial and other sectors had almost come to a nil as the government failed to maintain congenial atmosphere, they added.

The speakers said the law and order situation in different parts of the country continues to deteriorate.

Besides, the country has been isolated at the international level due to wrong policies of the government, they added.

Loren Beg, an indigenous leader, said the indigenous people are losing their ancestral lands due corruption and non-cooperation of political parties.

Dr Ibrahim Khaled, former deputy governor of Bangladesh Bank and Managing Director of Pubali Bank, Shishir Kumar Sircar, principal of Birampur Government Degree College, Monjur Islam Manju, freedom fighter, Advocate Mawla Baksh, Golam Mawla and Zillur Rahmam also spoke on the occasion.
