Resignation of CEC demanded

The CEC has lost moral rights to remain in his post as the verdict of the appellate division on May 23 went against him, said BDB Secretary General Major (Retd.) Abdul Mannan at a press conference in the city.

Leaders of the three political parties also warned the alliance government, saying that they would resist any conspiracy over the post of the president.

They said the nation is worried about the mysterious activities of the government regarding the president's illness. Confusion has been created as the government is trying to suppress information about the condition of the president, they added.

President of Jatiya Oikya Mancha Dr Kamal Hossain said they have placed proposals for electoral reforms in order to ensure a free and fair election, but the government did not take any measure in this regard although 10 months have already passed.

In reply to a query, he said that if anyone refuses to act as per court directives, they can be removed from their posts. Everyone must comply with the orders of the highest court, he added.

There is still enough time to appoint a new CEC acceptable to all parties and prepare a voter list according to the High Court directives, he said.

People want a change through a free and fair election; they also want to see honest and competent candidates in the upcoming election, said Dr Kamal.

On recent labour unrest, he said attacks on garment factories could have been avoided if the government had taken proper measures according to the laws.

Jatiya Oikya Mancha Member Secretary Commander (Retd.) Abdur Rauf and Tariqat Federation Secretary General Maulana Zakir Hossain were also present.
