Resignation of CEC demanded
At a political dialogue, they said the CEC is preparing the voter list by ignoring the order of the High Court. It is tantamount to contempt of court, they added.
BDB Organising Secretary Mahi B Chowdhury MP and JSD President Hasanul Haq Inu jointly put forward the demand for CEC's resignation at the dialogue held at KC Memorial Clinic office of BDB at Baridhara in the capital.
JSD Executive President Moinuddin Khan Badal said if 14-party opposition combine voted to power they will not take law in hand.
Instead, they will work for the separation of judiciary including an independent Election Commission and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), he added.
Moinuddin said the 23-point demand of the opposition combine has been formulated to bring a meaningful change in the society.
BDB President Prof AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury said people's faith in politicians has declined enormously as no government in the past followed democratic norms properly.
"So it has become imperative for us to tell the people what we want to do for them and how. We must tell them how we will root out criminal activities, corruption and militancy, otherwise they will not believe us (politicians)," he added.
Prof Chowdhury said the government has appointed a controversial person as CEC only to win the next general election.
Inu said with the support of the countrymen the ongoing oppositions' movement has to be accelerated through proper co-ordination among all the agitating parties.
Both BDB and JSD-Inu reached a consensus that they would work from their respective position to make judiciary independent, strengthen local government bodies, and root out corruption, criminal activities and communalism.
BDB Secretary General Major (Retd) Adul Mannan and JSD Joint Secretary General Shirin Akter were present on the occasion.
