Rickshaw-pullers, owners to lay siege to DCC on June 1

Insur Ali, member secretary of Sangram Parishad, announced the programme at a press conference at the Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) auditorium yesterday.

DCC signed an agreement with the Sangram Parishad on November 6 in 2001 about issuing 43,000 licenses to rickshaw-vans. It has not been implemented in long four and a half years.

Without implementing the agreement DCC seized a huge number of rickshaws in the name of making rickshaw-free. About 45,000 seized rickshaws have been distributed among the local workers of ministers and ruling party lawmakers.

Parishad leaders demanded return of the seized rickshaws to the real owner.

They said one Mahtabuddin in collaboration with a section of dishonest DCC officials under the umbrella of the ruling party has been using ownership of 8,540 date expired licenses in his name. He is selling the licenses at higher prices using the name of the DCC. As a result the DCC is being deprived of huge revenue, they said.
