Road crashes kill 12, injure 60

At least 12 people were killed and 60 others injured in separate road accidents in Comilla, Gazipur, Feni, Natore, Munshiganj, Patuakhali, Satkhira and Sirajganj yesterday and on Tuesday.

UNB from Comilla says: Two people were killed and five others injured in a head-on collision between a bus and a microbus at Barpara on Dhaka-Chittagong highway yesterday.

Witnesses said Homna-bound bus from Dhaka collided a Dhaka-bound microbus from Noakhali at about 4:00pm, leaving two passengers dead and five others injured.

The deceased were identified as Royal Miah and Russell.

The injured were admitted to different hospitals in Dhaka and Comilla.

BSS from Gazipur adds: An official of Bangladesh Open University (BOU) was killed and three others were injured in a road accident in front of the university yesterday, police said.

The sources said, the official identified as Mohammad Ali, Personal Assistant to the Dean of the BOU, died on the spot when a bus crushed him.

The deceased hailed from Siddai village under Raozan upazila in Chittagong.

Meanwhile, two people were killed and five others injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Chittagong highway at Mohammad Ali in Feni yesterday morning, police said.

The accident occurred when a passenger bus collided head-on with a tempo at Mohammad Ali, leaving two people dead.

The dead were identified as Zakir Hossain and Abdul Mannan.

The injured were admitted to local hospitals.

Another report from Natore says: Two people were killed and nine others injured in a road accident on Banpara-Hatikumrul Road under Manikpur here in the early hours of yesterday.

Police said the dead are coach driver Lokman Hossain, 45, and passenger Abul Hossain, 32.

The accident took place when the driver of the Dhaka-bound night coach from Banatipara lost control over the steering. The coach turned upside down, leaving the two dead on the spot.

The injured were rushed to Baraigram Health Complex.

A correspondent from Munshiganj reports: One person was killed and 33 others injured in separate road accidents in Munshiganj on Tuesday.

Police said a Sirajdikhan-bound bus from Atrashi in Faridpur collided with a lorry at Bejgaon Bus Stand area in Srinagar at around 4:00pm, leaving one unidentified man dead on the spot and 33 bus passengers injured. The injured bus passengers are followers of Atrashi Peer.

The injured were rushed to different hospitals in Munshiganj and Dhaka.

Our correspondent from Patuakhali adds: Two people were killed and five others injured in separate road accidents on Patuakhali-Dashmina and Patuakhali-Baufal road on Tuesday.

The dead were identified as Mohammad Gazi, 50, of Adabaria village under Baufal upazila, and Mosharraf Hossain, 26, of Dashmina village under Dashmina upazila in the district.

A speedy motorcycle hit Mohammad Gazi when he was crossing the Patuakhali-Baufal road at Rajakhali area under Dumki upazila. Locals rushed him to Dumki upazila health complex where on-duty doctor declared him dead at about 11:00am.

Meanwhile, a Dashmina-bound motor van from Hazikhali bazar fell into a roadside ditch at Thakurer hat area, leaving Mosharraf Hossain dead on the spot and five other passengers injured. The injured were released after first aid from Dashmina Upazila Health Complex.

Our Correspondent from Satkhira adds: An old man was killed in a road accident yesterday when a bus ran over him on Satkhira-Kaliganj road near Gazirhat in Debhata upazila.

The dead was identified as Shahar Ali, 68, son of Bahar Ali of village Indra Nagar in Kaliganj upazila.

Quoting local people police said a Kaliganj-bound mini bus ran over Shahar Ali while he was crossing the road, leaving him dead on the spot.

Our correspondent from Sirajganj adds: An elderly man, aged about 60, was crushed under the wheels of a passenger bus on the Dhaka-Bogra highway at Horgati area in Sirajganj district yesterday.

Identity of the victim could not be known immediately.

Police and witnesses said the accident took place at around 7.00am when a speeding bus crushed him when he was crossing a road.

Police sent the body to Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.
