RU marketing deptt students call strike today

The agitating students yesterday staged a demonstration in front of the central library and demanded cancellation of the selection of Bakhtier Rana, who was earlier sacked from a university in Chittagong for immoral activities.

Addressing a rally the student leaders also protested the postponement of the scheduled syndicate meeting from July 23 to July 28.

They claimed that the syndicate meeting was shifted to buy time to allow the student's agitation to die down.

The student leaders gave an ultimatum to university authorities to meet their demand, or they will call indefinite strike on the campus.

They also threatened that they will not attend classes and sit for examinations if Rana is finally appointed.

The rally was addressed by Depayan Sarker Deep, Babu Pervage and Farzana Ferdousi Ratna.

Earlier, the students boycotted their scheduled classes and examinations and formed a human chain on the campus demanding cancellation of the selection.

Sources said RU Vice-chancellor Prof Altaf Hossain had a meeting yesterday with the teachers of marketing department at his office and urged them to request their students not to call a strike on the campus.

Bangladesh Chhatra League and other left-leaning student organisations have expressed their solidarity with the strike call of marketing department students.
