SC rejects stay petition against HC order over ETV chairman

The Supreme Court yesterday rejected a government plea seeking stay on the High Court order asking the government not to arrest or harass Ekushey Television (ETV) Chairman Abdus Salam till November 20 in three criminal cases.

Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice MM Ruhul Amin also fixed November 16 for hearing on the stay petition filed by the government with the regular bench of the Appellate Division.

Additional Attorney General Abdur Razzak Khan and Deputy Attorney General Helaluddin Mollah moved for the government while advocate TH Khan opposed the petition.

On October 7 and 19, Farzana Shilpi, the divorced wife of Abdus Salam, and Sub-Inspector (SI) of Kafrul Thana Nasimul Islam filed three criminal cases against Abdus Salam with the Kafrul Police Station and the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's court.

After hearing separate bail petitions filed by Abdus Salam, also the managing director of ETV, the High Court on October 25 and 27 ordered the government not to arrest and harass him so that he can surrender before the High Court on November 20.
