SI, 5 informants on three-day remand

A court in Dhaka yesterday sent a policeman and five of his informants on a three-day remand to quiz them about the money embezzlement of Uttara Group of Industries on October 8.

First Class Magistrate Salma Siddiqua Mahtab heard the remand prayers in presence of the accused and granted three-day remand.

The arrestees are Sub-Inspector (SI) Ibrahim Khalil of Savar Police Station and informants Jahirul Islam, Abu Taher, Monirul Islam, Sona Miah and Jakir Hossain.

Uttara Group Official Liakat Ali was carrying the money in a land cruiser from Jessore to Dhaka when Savar police looted the money intercepting the vehicle at Ashulia on Saturday noon.

Savar police also showed Liakat Ali and his driver Ali Hossain as hundi traders and Tk 58 lakh in seizure.

But later under pressure from high-ups, Savar police confessed to their embezzlement attempt and returned Tk 2.33 crore.

Five informants were shown arrested under section 54 of Criminal Procedure Code and sent to jail on October 9.

SI Shawkat Alam filed a case with Savar Police Station against two policemen SI Ibrahim and SI Aminul Islam of Ashulia Police Box who were on run after the incident, and five informants on October 10.

SI Ibrahim was arrested and sent to prison on October 11, while the informants were also shown arrest in the regular case the same day.

Meantime, additional superintendent of police Amjad Hossain was closed and officer-in-charge of Savar police Station Tariq Kamal was suspended on October 11 in this connection.
