Six killed in road accidents

At least six people were killed and 15 others injured in separate road accidents in Sylhet, Comilla, Tangail, Khulna and Jhenidah yesterday.

Our staff correspondent from Sylhet adds: Two people were killed in a road accident on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway yesterday.

The dead were identified as Alais Miah, 42, of village Sojonsri and Miraj Uddin, 65, of Katia under Jagonnathpur upazila of Sunamganj district.

The accident occurred at about 1:30pm at Teromail area at Osmaninagar when a microbus collided head-on with a CNG-run autorickshaw, leaving Alais and Miraj, passengers of the autorickshaw, dead on the spot.

Another passenger Sayeed Uddin was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.

Police arrested microbus driver Yunus Ali.

A correspondent from Comilla reports: One person was killed in a road accident on Padwerbazar-Bishwa Road in Sadar Dakshin upazila yesterday.

The victim was identified as pick-up van driver Md Alim, 26, son of Gafur Sheikh of Chergovindapur under Kumerkhali upazila in Khustia district.

Witnesses and police said the accident took place at about 12:30 pm when the driver of a pick-up van from Chittagong lost control over the steering. The van skidded off the road and fell into a ditch due to reckless driving, they said.

One person died on the spot.

Police sent the body to Comilla Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

Our correspondent from Tangail adds: A truck driver was killed and five others were injured in a road accident in sadar upazila of the district yesterday.

Police and witnesses said the accident took place in the morning when a Dhaka-bound electric transformer-laden truck collided head-on with another speedy truck from the opposite direction at Gharinda area on Dhaka-Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Highway, leaving driver of the transformer-laden truck dead on the spot and five people of both the trucks injured.

Police recovered the body and took it to Tangail Police Station.

The identity of the dead aged about 40 years could not be known immediately.

The injured people were admitted to Tangail General Hospital.

Our staff correspondent from Khulna reports: One person was killed and 10 others were injured in a road accident yesterday at Phultala upazila in Khulna district.

The accident occurred at 8:30am when a Khulna-bound staff bus of Bangladesh Bank collided head-on with a Jessore-bound pick-up van near Damodar village on Khulna-Jessore highway.

The dead was identified as pick-up van driver Shafiar Rahman, 44, while the injured are Mosharef, Prakash, Aziz, Taleb, Salam, Amirul, Anisur Rahman, Sarwar, Rehana Akhter and Shamsur Rahman. The injured are staff of Khulna branch of Bangladesh Bank.

Of the injured, Prakash and Mosharef were admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital with fractures in their legs and hands while eight others are undergoing treatment at Phultala Upazila Health Complex.

Police seized both the vehicles while driver of the bus managed to escape.

Our correspondent from Jhenidah adds: A septuagenarian was killed in a road accident near Shatbaria Bazar yesterday.

The victim was identified as Moniruddin Mollah, 78, of Ektarpur village under Kaliganj upazila in the district.

Witnesses said a speeding microbus knocked Moniruddin when he was crossing the road at Shatbaria Bazar at around 11.30am leaving him injured.

The locals rushed him to Kaliganj Health Complex where he succumbed to injuries at 12.25pm.

Police sent the body to Jhenidah Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
