Six receive awards

The prize giving ceremony of the 10th Berger Young Painters' Art Competition 2005 was held at Hotel Sonargaon in the city recently, says a press release.

The six winners of this year-- Zohurul Islam, Hanifur Rahman Faysal, Sahid Kazi, Khurshad Nizami Khushi, Ratan Kanti Das and Sangeeta Chowdhury -- received the awards from the winners of the previous year.

Many artists, art connoisseurs, art lovers and eminent citizens of the country attended the colourful ceremony to celebrate the decade long festivity of creativity.

Renowned educationist Dr Anisuzzaman and Berger Paints Bangladesh Ltd. Managing Director Masih Ul Karim distributed crests to the personalities, who were members of the jury committee for the last 10 years.

Masih Ul Karim in his speech said, "If the critics analyse the art works of the participants of last 10 years, in addition to the artistic distinction, they will find a continuity of our nation's hopes, dreams and aspirations. The very aesthetic sense of beauty that inspires people to paint their homes in vibrant colours is a reflection of their dream to live in a world enriched with all the joie de vivre of the colours of the rainbow.

Prof Qayum Chowdhury said, "When nearly all lighthouses of creativity are fading in the face of ever increasing mechanical civilisation the country and the society should enthuse to keep this endeavour in the front-line if someone or some institution intend to keep the torch alive."

The event was also graced by noted singer Runa Laila.

Berger has also arranged a five-day exhibition. Six paintings of the winners and 40 other selected paintings were displayed at the Zainul Art Gallery of the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka.
