Slain Khulna AL leader Imam's 3rd anniversary of death today

On the occasion, Khulna AL has taken different programmes.

The programmes include offering of fateha at his grave and day long Qurankhwani and discussion meeting and milad mahfil in the party office in the evening.

Meanwhile, Manjurul Imam Mancha formed a human chain at the Picture Palace cinema hall intersection from 11:00am to 12:00noon yesterday demanding fresh investigation into the murder case.

Imam was killed in a bomb attack near his residence at Shamsur Rahman Road on August 25 in 2003. Rickshawpuller Saidul Islam Akand was also killed in the attack. Advocate Bijon Bihari Mondol, who was accompanying Imam, succumbed to bullet injuries on August 30 at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Imam's son Abdullah Al Mamun lodged an FIR with Khulna Police Station on August 26 in this connection. The case was handed over to DB police on September 18, 2003. Investigation officer (IO) Inspector Shajahan Howlader submitted a charge sheet on March 11 in 2004 naming four extremists --- Shukur Gazi, Shaikh Ripon, Ganesh Banerjee and Imam Sardar --- as accused.

Of the accused, Shukur is now in jail while Ripon is on bail and Ganesh is still at large. Imam Sardar was killed in crossfire at Fakirhat in Bagerhat in November 2004.

Khulna AL and Imam's family rejected the chargesheet as godfathers and financiers behind the murder were left out of it.

Janajuddho armed cadre Shahadat Hossain arrested in Dhaka in March last year confessed to his involvement in the murder during interrogation by DB police. But he is yet to be named in the charge sheet as an accused.

Complainant Mamun said he feels insecure to take any more interest in the case as one of the godfathers belonging to ruling party lives adjacent to his residence.
