SMS service launched to locate containers at New Mooring Terminal

To help the port users locate containers within seconds, an SMS (Short Message Service) system was launched at the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT) of Chittagong port yesterday.

Saif Powertec Ltd - the private port management company that earlier introduced the same service at Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT), launched the service at NCT where it started container handling on May 16.

To locate a container at NCT now one would have to type 'Saif container number' and then send the message to 7464 (for GrameenPhone subscribers) or to 7890 (for Aktel, Banglalink, CityCell and Teletalk subscribers). The service would provide the location within 30 seconds, said a press release here yesterday.

Managing Director of Saif Powertec T M Ruhul Amin said with the introduction of the SMS service, users need not go to the port to find a container, a process which earlier took one or two days and cost Tk 1500 to 2000.

The huge interest shown by the business community in the SMS at CCT encouraged Saif Powertec to expand the service to the NCT, said the managing director adding that the company had plans to introduce more technology-based services in the port in future.

Saif Powertec took the charge of container handling at the CCT on March 5 and introduced the SMS service there on May 3 through software installation at a cost of Tk 1.5 crore, sources said.

Some 15000 containers of CCT yard were brought under the network of the software to tell instantly about the location of a container on its arrival at the yard, they said.
