Three commit suicide in city
The three are Bijli Akhtar Swapna, 13, Khairul Islam, 25, and Smriti Begum, 19.
The family of Bijli said two youths teased the teenage girl on her way to a relative's house at Adarshanagar in Pallabi in the evening of Thursday.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. An insulted Bijli committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling after returning to her house at 9:00pm.
Her uncle Manik Miah told reporters that the boys had been teasing Bijli for a long time but the locals did not take any initiative even after they made complaints.
"The youths rather implicated Bijli's father in a false rape case to harass the family," he alleged.
Khairul, a resident of Bhatara Purbapara in Badda, locked in a feud with his wife over some family matters yesterday morning and hanged himself at his house at about 9:00am.
Meanwhile, Smriti, second wife of one Shahadat Hossain, hanged herself at her house at Paschim Manikdi in cantonment yesterday afternoon. The reason behind her suicide could not be known.
Smriti's husband has been absconding since the incident.
The police recovered the bodies and sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for autopsy.
