Three killed, 17 injured in road accidents

Two police constables and a person were killed and 17 others injured in separate road accidents in Brahmanbaria, Manikganj and Rajshahi districts in the last two days.

Abdur Razzak, a member of armed police battalion, was killed and two other policemen were injured when a truck carrying them overturned on Dhaka-Sylhet highway near Baragharia in Islampur, Brahmanbaria early yesterday.

Police and witnesses said the truck were carrying sugar ration for the police from Natore to Sylhet. But the speeding truck fell into a roadside ditch as the driver fell asleep. Police constable Razzak died on the spot.

His body was sent to Brahmanbaria Hospital for autopsy. Razzak hailed from Tangail.

Injured Sub-Inspector Abdus Selim and Constable Mohammad Salek were admitted to Brahmanbaria Hospital.

In Manikganj, one person was killed and 15 others were injured in a when a bus rammed into a shop after it collided head-on with a speeding truck near Pukuria bus stand on Dhaka-Aricha highway yesterday morning.

Witnesses said the Barisal-bound passenger bus was hit by a speeding truck coming from the opposite direction.

Of the injured, three are stated to be in a critical condition.

The identity of the dead could not be known immediately. Three seriously injured people were sent to Dhaka while others were admitted to Manikganj Sadar Hospital.

Another police constable was killed when a night coach hit him in Rajshahi city on Thursday night.

The victim was identified as Bahar Uddin. He hailed from Bhangura in Pabna.

The accident took place as the driver of the Dhaka-bound bus from Chapainawabganj lost control over the steering. Bahar was on patrol when the bus hit him.

Soon after the accident, the driver managed to escape but the police seized the bus and arrested its supervisor Abdul Gaffar.
