Voter list yet to reach RCC wards

Commissioners of wards no 26 and 30 said they failed to get the draft lists despite seriously approaching the election office and the election commission employed assistant registration officer (ARO).

"People of the area are knocking at my office every day," said Golam Kuddus, commissioner of ward no 26.

"I went to the assistant registration officer, but he refused to give voter lists", Abdus Samad, commissioner of ward no 30, said.

ARO Nazim Uddin, also assistant secretary of Bangladesh Science and Industries Laboratory, said he was not provided with any extra copy of the voter lists.

The election office sources, however, said that the ward commissioners' offices will get the lists 'shortly'.

Complaints

Wazed Ali, a retired demonstrator of Jessore Polytechnic Institute and resident of Jamalpur under ward no 26 said he could not see the voter list as it was not hung at the ward commissioner office.

Commissioner Anwarul Amin of ward no 27 said he received the draft lists three days ago and recorded many complaints of double and wrong names.

There were many errors in the lists received yesterday, Commi-ssioner Murad Ali of ward no 14 said, adding, "Some names have been listed in two different areas while some are without any address. We are verifying the complaints."

At Aliganj, a ward of seven villages in Haragram union, some 2500 new voters were added this year, said the UP Chairman Abul Kalam Azad referring to the draft list.

He tried to justify it by saying that many city people as well as people from chars of the River Padma migrated to the villages in last five years.

"Nobody came to enrol us as voters. I don't know if we have become voters," said 45-year-old Manjura Khatun of one of the villages.

Local youth Azad Hossain, who rebuked Manjura for talking to journalists, said he himself listed the names of Manjura's family members and their neighbours.

Akhtarunnesa was also rebuked as she made the same complaint.
