Workshop on working environment begins in city

A three-day workshop on 'Working environment, health and safety for graphical industry in Bangladesh' began in the city yesterday.

The workshop has been organised jointly by Union Network International, a world organisation of trade unions, and the FNV of Holland.

Mujibur Rehman Bhuiyan, general secretary of Bangladesh Mudran Shilpa Federation, inaugurated the workshop at Sundarban Hotel in the morning.

Speaking as chief guest at the workshop, M L Talwar, treasurer of All India Newspaper Employees Federation, said the work places were under going major changes in the wake of globalisation and modernisation.

As a result, the challenges before the unions including occupational health and safety were changing, he added.

Talwar said in the past, the workers in graphical industry faced problems of lead poisoning and the diseases related to the lead fumes, but today they are facing the problems of stress as a result of working on computers for long hours.

Nurul Islam Babu, president of Bangladesh Unmukta Federation, spoke about the occupational health and safety condition in Bangladesh.

Chaired by President of Bangladesh Printing and Packaging Karmochari Federation (BPPKF) Khandaker Jamal Uddin, the workshop was also addressed by its General Secretary Abdus Sobhan and Joint Secretary General of BFUNPW Golam Sarwar Azad.
