Youth beaten to death in city

However, Rana's family members yesterday alleged that Rana's killing was a pre-meditated by the students of the college.

Rana's father Majidul Alam filed a murder case with Mohammadpur Police Station accusing around 25 students of the college.

Alam said Rana, an HSC examinee this year, left for a friend's place at Hatirpool from their Uttar Mugda, Shabujbag house at 3:30pm.

"A phone call came to me at about 7:30pm saying that my son had been involved in a crime and I needed to pay for his release," Alam told The Daily Star.

As Alam reached the Dental College dorm at Sobhanbag as instructed by the caller, he found his son laying on the floor beside the stairs on the ground floor.

The students there claimed that Rana went there to steal a cell phone. The students then made him sign a blank paper before handing over his son to him.

Alam took him son to a local clinic and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared Rana dead at 11:00pm.

Rana' elder brother Rezwan Alam Ronny said the cell phone that Rana was carrying has been missing. "Some unknown people of the Dental College answered when I called that cell phone."

Later, the family came to know that one Sujon, a friend of Rana's, took him to the college dorm.
