5 villages reel under water as Kobadak breaches dam

Five villages in Koira upazila in Khulna district were inundated rendering a large number of people homeless as an embankment of Kobadak river constructed by WAPDA collapsed yesterday.

The embankment collapsed at Nayana village due to big cracks, said Koira Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ruhul Amin.

The surge of water through the crack could not be checked till yesterday evening. More villages will reel under water, he said.

The affected people were asked over microphone to take shelter at safer places.

The inundated villages already are Nayanis, Amtala, Mahashwaripur, Kalibari and Hadda.

The flood water washed away shrimps from at least 60 farms. The extent of damage to crops could not yet be assessed, said Khulna District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Md Moniruzzaman said.

No official of WAPDA reached the affected area till yesterday evening to take steps to check the surging water, chairman of Maheshwaripur Union Parishad Shahabuddin Molla told this correspondent.
