5 witnesses examined by court in Gaibandha

Gaibandha District and Sessions Judge Court yesterday examined statements of five out of 40 witnesses in connection with the August 17 serial bomb blasts case.

The witnesses are Guru Charon, Bablu Sarder, Abdus Salam Mandol, former stationmaster, Shahidul Islam and Hasu Mia.

'I have seen the accused Matin Mehdi and Abdul Aziz to plant a red tapped material with a banyan tree on the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office premises. Later, the bomb exploded with a big bang while both the accused were taking tea at a nearby tea stall, Hasu Mia said during a cross examination in the court.

Former station master Abdus Salam Mandol said, 'I heard a big bang from my office and found smoke at the station yard where I saw the evidence of bomb.'

Earlier, the court recorded statements of 11 other witnesses.

They are Abdul Wahed, assistant stationmaster, Abdul Jalil, Haider Ali, Amirul Islam, Shisir Shaha, Shaheb Ali, Md Haider Ali, Rafiqul Islam, Atique Hasan Rony, Jahidul Islam and Abdus Satter.

Activists of banned Jama'atul Mujahideen, Bangladesh (JMB) blasted 8 bombs at different important places in the town.

DB police officer-in-charge (OC) Julfiquer Ali submitted charge sheet against four persons named Matin Mehdi alias Taroka Matin alias Motinul Islam. Abdul Aziz, Ziaur Rahman Badal and Abdul Kaiyum.

Ziaur Rahman Badal and Abdul Kaiyum were produced before court under tight security, but Matin Mehdi and Abdul Aziz still remained at large.

The court fixed the next date of witness on August 15.
