Acid thrower gets life in Sylhet

A court here yesterday sentenced one person to life term rigorous imprisonment (RI) for throwing acid on a college girl.

The convict is Enamul Azam Biplob.

Sylhet District and Sessions Judge Md Abdul Gafur, also a judge of the Acid Tribunal pronounced the verdict.

The judge asked him to pay a fine of Tk 25,000, xin default, to suffer two years more RI. The convict was also asked to pay Tk 50,000 to the victim as compensation. On failure, he will have to suffer in jail for another year.

Biplob threw acid on Lovely Begum as she did not respond to his proposal for love. The incident happened at night when she was asleep at her father's house at Islampur village in Companiganj upazila on September 5 last year.

Critically injured Lovely took treatment at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital and Acid Survivors' Foundation in Dhaka for months together.
