Awami League (AL) leaders at a meeting held here yesterday blasted the government for failure to arrest the culprits involved in August 7 grenade attack in 2004.

City AL publicity secretary Md Ibrahim was killed and 50 leaders and activists of the party were injured in the attack.

AL leaders also criticised the government agencies for failure to nab the masterminds of other grenade and bomb attacks in recent years.

District AL organised the meeting yesterday afternoon in the court point area marking two years into grenade attack at Gulshan Centre in the city. A good number of AL leaders and activists including police official were killed while the British High Commissioner in Bangladesh sustained serious injuries in the attack.

President of the district unit ANM Shafique presided the meeting. Among others, Sylhet City Corporation Mayor Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran, also city AL chief, ex-MP Syeda Zebunnesa Haque and district AL general secretary Iftekhar Hossain Shamim addressed the meeting.

Speakers said the ruling party men as well the government machinery harassed the opposition leaders and activists by implicating them in false cases.

The opposition activists were arrested and thrown into jail for months and tortured by police on various occasions. But, last of all nothing came out tangible while the government could not prove any case, they alleged.

Speakers also criticised the government for the extra judicial killings.

The Mayor said, the government failed to take any punitive measure against the culprits involved in bomb and grenade attacks in Sylhet region during the last few years.

The government also failed to protect the religious places like the shrine of great Muslim saint Hajrat Shahjalal (RA) where repeated bombings and grenade attacks were made within a span of four months only, he said.

In his address, he narrated the incidents of different bomb and grenade blasts in which he narrowly escaped while AL leaders like Ivy Rahman and SAMS Kibria were killed.

He demanded international probe into all of the incidents of bomb and grenade attacks.
