Attack on landless to grab govt land

Over 200 landless people including women from Char Hadi, a remote shoal in Dashmina upazila, formed a human chain in front of Patuakhali Press Club yesterday protesting attacked on them allegedly by some local BNP men to evict them from government lands.

Earlier, at a press conference at the press club, their leader Abdul Barek Hawlader alleged that on July 23, about 30 men lead by Alauddin, a local BNP leader, ransacked five houses in the shoal, looted belongings and assaulted women. The attackers threatened them to leave the area.

After the attack, the victims filed a case with Dashmina thana but police did not take any action, he alleged.

After filing of the case, the land grabbers became angry and attacked 25 houses.

The matter was discussed at a meeting of upazila law and order meeting on July 24 with Dashmina UNO in the chair. The UNO asked police to take action against the culprits after investigation. But police are yet to take any action, they alleged.

Local Union Parishad chairman Sekander Ali Jomaddar, also president of Dashmina uapzila Krishak Dal, a front of BNP and uapzila Jubo Dal president Momin Talukder were also present at the press conference.
