BNP-Jamaat bid for rally foiled again

Official sources said, Section 144 was clamped Tuesday evening at Shayampur Chama field where both the feuding groups called meetings.

The BNP-Jamaat alliance first called the meeting at Kansat on the plea of inaugurating Kansat College development work.

The PBUSP also called a meeting at the same place at the same time. Hundreds of people also staged demonstrations in Kansat and Shayampur areas protesting holding of the BNP meeting.

Shahjahan Mia later postponed the meeting to avoid violence, said sources in BNP and Jamaat in Shibganj.

Earlier, another meeting called by BNP was also thwarted on June 6.

Shahjahan Mia, who is blamed for the death of 17 villagers in police firing in the area few months ago, could not visit the villages since the incidents.

AS parliamentary election is nearing, Shajahan is trying to hold meeting in the area to secure nomination, sources said.
