A case has been filed with Islampur police station in Jamalpur district against 172 local BNP leaders and activists for snatching an accused from police and assaulting a sub-inspector (SI) at the police station.

SI Ahad Ali of Islampur police station arrested one Mendu Mistiri alias Mukul Mondal from Mouja Jalla village Thursday night in a loan default case filed by an NGO.

As Mendu Mistiri was taken to the police station, several hundred people including BNP activists led by the upazila unit general secretary of the party Nabi Newas Khan went to the police station. They allegedly assaulted SI Ahad Ali and snatched the accused from custody.

Additional police were sent to Islampur from the district headquarters but the accused could not be arrested as he fled home.

Police then filed a case against 172 BNP leaders and activists

including Nabi Newas Khan for assaulting the SI and snatching the accused.

SI Babul Hossen, holding the charge of OC, told this correspondent that the case has been filed against the BNP men as per instruction of higher authorities.

But Nabi Newas Khan later talking to newsmen denied that BNP activists assaulted the SI.
