Progressive Teachers' Society (PTS) yesterday demanded of the Rajshahi University (RU) authorities to cancel the 'controversial appointments' made during the Eid vacation.

Pro-Awami League (AL) and left-leaning PTS members submitted their demand to vice chancellor (VC) Prof Altaf Hossain at his residence at noon.

They also urged the university authorities to stop fresh recruitment during tenure of caretaker government. They urged the authorities to do only routine administrative activities at that time.

PTS convener Prof Abdus Sobhan, Syndicate member Saiful Islam, Prof Moloy Kumer, Prof Ananda Kumar and Prof Mokhlesur Rahman were present during submission of the demand.

After submission of the demand, they threatened a greater agitation if their demand is not fulfilled immediately.

Earlier, the Rajshahi University authorities politically recruited about 546 employees. Workers' Party leader Fazle Hossain Badsha challeged the recruitment in court terming it illegal.

During the Eid vacation, the university authorities regularised 222 appointments allegedly maid by violating rules.
