CHT out of OMS of rice, appeal ignored

The government has excluded Rangamati, Khagrachhari and Bandarban hill districts from Open Market Sale (OMS) of rice, ignoring appeals from the administrations to introduce the programme for the ultra poor in the three districts.

Official sources here said the Rangamati Deputy Controller (DC) of Food had faxed a message to the Food Directorate in Dhaka on February 19 urging the authorities to include the district in the OMS programme.

The message followed a meeting of 10 Upazila Nirbahi Officers (UNOs) at the Deputy Commissioner's office on February 15, which expressed the necessity of OMS of rice in the district.

But the response was negative.

When contacted yesterday, DC (food) Md Hemayet Uddin said he had also phoned the Director General of Food in Dhaka on February 19.

The DG Food told him, "Food support is being provided for the people of this (CHT) region through various channels and necessity of OMS is not acute".

Hemayet Uddin said Khagrachhari and Bandarban districts are also out of the purview of the OMS programme.

Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Gazi Mohammed Zulhash also said relevant authorities were urged to begin OMS programme in the district, but to no response.
