Enact tougher laws to curb acid violence

Speakers at a discussion meeting here yesterday called for enacting tougher laws against acid violence and ensuring punishment to the culprits.

Acid attack, particularly on women, are increasing as perpetrators of the henous crime take the chance of legal loopholes in collusion with a section of law enforcers, they said at the discussion on Resist Acid Terrorist, held at Sadar upazila auditorium. It was organised by Sodesh, a local NGO with assistance from Action Aid, an international NGO.

Satkhira Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md Ilias was the chief guest at the meeting presided over by Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) SM Ashrafuzzaman.

Teachers, lawyers, businessmen, journalists and students attended the meeting.

The discussants included bar association president Tpan Chakraborty, chamber president Sheikh Azhar Hossain and Action Aid Country Director Syed Siddique.

The discussants also stressed the need for treatment and rehabilitation of victims of acid violence.

Terming acid terrorists as enemies of society, they called for building social resistance against them by creating awareness.
