Former municipal chairman charged with scam

The Bureau of Anti-corruption (BAC) has filed a case against a former chairman of Patuakhali Pourasabha, its three officials and two contractors for alleged financial scam involving Tk 11 lakh Taka.

The accused are former municipal chairman advocate Md Sultan Ahmed Mridha, Executive Engineer Ranjan Kanti Guha, Sub-assistant Engineer Sarder Mahbob, Ward Commissioner Mohon Gazi and contractors ABM Shahin Ferdouse and Amal Ratan.

BAC Inspector Abdur Rahim Joarder filed the case with the Special Judge Court after investigation and approval from the Prime Minister's office, BAC sources said.

The sources said 3.62 lakh was allegedly misappropriated in the Charpara road repair project, implemented in 2002-03 financial year.

Another Tk 7.85 lakh was misappropriated from funds allocated for three road repair projects in Patuakhali town, they said.

The investigation report was sent to the Prime Minister's office and the case was filed after approval from there, they said.
