A former police sub-inspector was given life yesterday for illegal arms trading.

Barisal Special Trial Tribunal handed down the punishment to Nur Mohammad Sikdar alias Nuru Daroga, 62. He hails from Golabunia village in Patuakhali Sadar upazila.

Judge M A Matin gave the verdict under Section 19(F) of the Arms Act after examining 18 witnesses and evidences.

Court sources said members of RAB-8, acting on a tip-off, caught Nur Mohammad while he was trying to sell a gun at Lemukhali Bazar in Patuakhali Sadar upazila on March 23.

Acting on his confession, a RAB team recovered more fire arms and ammunition from his house. Those were wrapped in blankets and hidden inside an almirah.

The firearms included one LG gun, 3 shotguns, 3 pipe guns and 3 pistols.

Rab member Jahangir Hossain lodged a case under Arms Act with Patuakhali Sadar police station on the same day.
