Several hundred female students from Assassuni and Kaligonj upazilas brought out a procession at Satkhira town on Thursday protesting cancellation of women's volley ball competitions at the two upazilas following alleged obstruction by Jamaat-e-Islami.

The meets were scheduled to be held yesterday but cancelled earlier by the local administrations as local Jamaat leaders termed women's volley ball 'unislamic'.

The students under the banner of Sachen Nari Samaj (conscious women) paraded the streets chanting anti-Jamaat slogans, held a rally in front of the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office and handed over a memorandum to DC AYM Ekramul Haq for holding the meets.

The rally was addressed by Shyamali Rani Mondal, Yasmin Nahar and Ishita Rani Mondal.

The Jamaat action is against women's freedom, they said.

They also held a press conference at Satkhira Reporters Club.
