Monsoon rain triggers flash flood in three districts
Authorities also imposed restriction on plying small water transports (less than 65 feet in length) at night due to the unfavourable weather.
Flash flood caused by weeklong heavy downpour in Barisal washed away parts of Satla-Bagda embankment at several points in Uzirpur and Agoiljhara upazilas.
The worst affected areas are Keasbpur, Kalbila, Jambari, Habibpur, Otra, Bhavanipur, Munshirtaluk, Moshang, Ramerkati, Jalla, Satla, and Potibari under Uzirpur and Chatri Shira, Bagda, Askor, Nagirpar, Sangkarpar, Somairpar under Agoiljhara upazila.
The approach roads to the Doarika and Shikarpur bridges are threatened due to erosion by the Sandhya and Sugandha rivers.
High tide in the downstreams of Meghna and its branch rivers has overflooded and eroded the river banks in different areas under Mehendiganj, Hizla and Muladi upazilas of the district.
In Patuakhali, most parts of the town and low lying areas of Galachipa, Kalapara, Baufal, Dumki, Mirzaganj, Sadar and Dasmina upazilas went under water following rain and high tide because of depression in the Bay.
Patuakhali town is unprotected, as the proposed town protection embankment could not be built in last eight years.
About two kilometers of the flood control embankment have been badly damaged in Kalapara and Galachipa upazilas, officials of Water Development Board (WDB) and the upazila administration said.
About 40 shoals in the these upazilas are now under three to five feet surging water. The worst affected are Char Ganga and Lata Chapli in Kalapara; Char Halim, Char Agunmukha, Char Karforma, Char Bangla in Galachipa; Ramgopaldi, Khalishakhali and Alipura in Dasmina; Muradia in Dumki and North Badura in the Sadar upazila.
In Barguna, most areas of the district town have gone under water and about 20,000 people remained marooned.
Flood protection embankments in Baluganj, Baliatoli, Falishatoli, Kalmegha and Bogi in Barguna Sadar are also threatened by the erosion.
