Women at a remote village in Satkhira raised voices against gender discrimination and protested lower wages than men for same work.

About 300 women joined a view-exchange meeting at Dhulihar village in the Sadar upazila with a slogan'no more half wage for same work'.

Organised by Dhulihar-Brahmmarajpur Sarbik Manab Unnayan Sangathan, a local association, this was the first such programme held in Satkhira rural areas.

The meeting on 'gender equity and development' was held at Dhulihar Union Parishad auditorium with its president Shakhina Khatun in the chair. The programme was assisted by CARITAS, an NGO.

Local body leaders, teachers, members of the elite and some journalists were also present at the meting.

The speakers urged the government to formulate a pragmatic and effective police to remove gender discrimination in jobs and payments for other works. Women's empowerment is not possible unless discrimination is eliminated, they said.

They also called for a change in the attitude of the society in this regard.
