Protests at RU continue

The appointments were made ignoring the selection boards in the departments, BCL leaders claimed at the rally held in front of Central Library. The strongly protested the appointments and demanded their cancellation in the intesest of maintaining academic atmosphere at the university.
Earlier, RU authorities selected Bakhtier Rana as a teacher in Marketing department. He was dismissed from service from a university in Chittagong for alleged immoral activities.
In Marketing department, the RU authorities selected eight persons as teachers against two advertised posts, they said.
The BCL leaders claimed that the RU authorities, aligned with ruling BNP and Jammat-e-Islami, has selected the eight persons, as many others on other departments, only on political consideration.
The controversial appointments have tarnished image of the university and affected academic atmosphere, they said and threatened to launch tougher agitation if the selections are not scrapped.
BCL RU unit president Ibrahim Hossain Moon, general secretary Ayen Uddin and party leaders Zahid Ali and Rashidul Islam addressed the rally.
Earlier, they brought out a procession on the campus.
SCF activists held a separate rally in front of the Business Administration building demanding resignation of Vice- chancellor Prof Altaf Hossain for allowing Islamic Chhatra Shibir leader Mahbub Alam Salehi to appear at masters examination.
Salehi is the prime accused in a case filed in connection with the murder of Prof S Taher Ahmed of Geology and Mining department. Prof S Taher was killed on the night of February 1 at his flat on the campus.
SCF leaders also criticised university authorities and police administration for not submitting charge sheet in the Prof Taher murder case in five months after the incident.
