Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank (RAKUB) has raised new hopes among the disabled. It will give them interest-free loans without collateral.

Amidst despair, several hundred disable people at a discussion meeting here found a ray of hope to become self-reliant.

RAKUB declared at a discussion meeting that it would give loans to over 100 disable people in the district for income generating activities.

The meeting was organised by the Rangpur Disable Foundation (RDF), a local NGO, in observance of the National Disable Day on April 8. It was held on RDF office premises in the town on April 6, two days ahead of schedule, as Awami League called countrywide dawn to dusk hartal on April 7 and 8.

RDF has several hundred disable members.

RAKUB officials announced at the conference that initially up to Tk 5,000 would be given as loan to a disabled person for any income generating activity.

The amount could be increased in future if the project benefits the disabled and repayment rate is good, they said.

ATM Mostafa Kamal was the chief guest at the meeting, addressed by, among others, RAKUB Zonal Manager Akbar Hossen, RDF General Secretary Mihir Kumar Halder and its Vive President Abul Kamal Chowdhury.

Mostafa Kamal also proposed that RDF could set up show room in Rangpur for sale of handicrafts and other products made by the disable. The rich should come forward to help them in this regard, he said.
