'Rapist' released by police
Satkhira Jan 26: An alleged rapist caught by people and handed over to police on Sunday night, was released by police on Monday.
Local people said, Munayem Sarder, 34, of Waziar Rahman of Jugikhali village in Kalaroa upazila was caught by villagers allegedly for raping a housewife in the same village.
They handed him over to police. But a local ruling party leader asked the victim and her husband to "negotiate the matter or to face dire consequences.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. The victim family was compelled to negotiate and they were given Tk 10,000 to hush up the rape incident.
Sources in the local unit of the ruling party seeking anonymity said, the hush money was shared by the leader and police, who released the culprit.
When contacted, police said they released the rapist a case was not filed.
