The Shalikha upazila Awami League council began with much enthusiasm and the first session was held peacefully. But it could not form a new committee as squabbles over election or selection marred the second session.

Former state minister for relief and rehabilitation Talukder-Abdul Khaleque MP who attended the council as chief guest and top leaders of Magura district AL left the venue.

After postponement thrice in the last 14 days, the council began at about noon on Sunday at Shalikha upazila headquarters as mid-level party leaders there assured the district leaders of a peaceful holding. Witnesses said the scuffle began in the evening when a faction of the upazila AL demanded that the new committee be formed with councilors' vote. The other faction wanted selection.

When contacted later, district AL convener Md Altaf Hossain, however denied that there was any scuffle. The thana committee could not be formed as a dispute arose over acceptability of a union committee.

The committee will be formed soon, he said.

The Shalikha AL is split into two factions, one led by its president Tarapada Biswas and the other by general secretary advocate Kamal Hossain.

The last council of Shalikha thana AL was held in 1997.
