Shun politics of confrontation

Speakers at a roundtable at Shyamnagar yesterday urged leaders of all parties to shun politics of confrontation and reach a consensus to institutionalise democracy.

They expressed serious concern at the violence on streets by the two alliances, saying this will only lead the country towards a serious crisis. They also urged parties npot to involve criminals in election campaign.

Poliitcal parties have the responsibility to lead the nation towards development but instead, they are now pushing it towards uncertainty and destruction of the economy.

The roundtable was organised by two local dailies-Patradut and Dristipat-and Uttaran, a local NGO with assistance from the European Commission.

A large number of civil society members, professionals, officials, attende the roundtable held at Shyamnagar upazila auditorium with Prof. Shahana Hamid in the chair.

It was addressed by, among others, former lawamaker and aspirants for nomination in coming election AK Fazlul Haque, Jaglul Haidar Jhharu, Asim Kumar Mridha, Anisuzzaman and Shafiul Azam Lenin of AL; former MP Gazi Nazrul Islam of Jamaat-e-Islami; advocate Syed Iftekhar Ali of BNP; freedom fighter Abdul Mazid; Master Abdul Wahed; Principal Ashek E Elahi; Principal Osman Gani and Zillur Rahman of Ahmadiyya community.

They also urged nomination aspirants to take measures to resist violenece before anmd after the election.

Demanding compulsory registration of political parties, they said this will ensure a fair political process and help consolidate democracy in the country.

They said politics must be freed from money and muscle power if the parties really want to do good to the people, they said.
