Sultan's birth anniversary function at Narail today

SM Sultan Birth Celebration Committee-2006 along with other socio-cultural organisations have chalked out elaborate programmes to observe the day in the home district of the artist.
The day-long programmes include placing of floral wreaths at Sultan's grave, Quran Khwani, milad mahfil, discussion meeting, art exhibition and art competition for children at Shishu Swarga, holding of rally and boat race on Chitra iver.
State Minister for Water Resources Goutam Chakrawarty will attend the function as chief guest.
SM Sultan was born in 1924 at Masimdia village in Narail. He had his primary education in Narail Victoria Collegiate School. He studied in Calcutta Art School from 1941-1945 and then went to Kashmir and started painting the life of aboriginal people in the hills.
Sultan joined the international conference of painters in the USA in 1950 as representative of the then Pakistan. His paintings were exhibited in New York, Boston, London and Michigan University during his visit to the USA.
Cambridge University declared him Man of Asia in 1982.
Sultan was bestowed with the Ekushey Padak in 1982 and Swadhinata Padak in 1993. He died on October 10, 1994.
