Sundarbans Textile Mills loses Tk 1cr in 4 months

The Sundarbans Textile Mills Ltd, the lone state-owned large industry in the district, incurred a loss of about Tk one crore in last four months due to severe load shedding.

Due to power outage for hours almost every day, the mill now feces closure. The production lagged far behind the target, mill officials said.

Over 1500 workers and employees are passing miserable days as they did not get their salaries since January due fund constraint, they said.

In last four months, the Power Development Board (PDB) supplied only one megawatt of power daily against a demand for two megawatt, the mill officials said.

At times, production remains suspended for 12 hours a day, they said. Moreover, valuable equipment are being destroyed due to low voltage, they added.

Giving details, they said the mill incurred a loss of Tk 6 lakh in January, Tk 7.79 lakh in February, Tk 26.81 lakh in March and Tk 31.62 lakh in April due to load shedding for 192, 160, 48 and 39 hours respectively, the mill's general manager Mahbubul Alam told this correspondent.

He said he sent several letters to local PDB officials for smooth supply of power. PDB officials assured him always but the power supply situation did not improve.

The mill can be turned profitable if smooth power supply is ensured, he said.
